Effectiveness of Drug Safety Education for Middle and High School Students in Korea

Abstract
Medication errors are becoming a worldwide social burden. To prevent these problems, proper perception of medication use from adolescence is crucial. The Ministry of Drug and Food Safety in Korea has supported educational programs on the safe use of medications for the youth. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of such education via surveys. From April to November 2015, educational programs on the safe use of medications were implemented at middle and high schools in Incheon, and surveys were conducted before and after each program. A total of 1,871 questionnaires from middle schools and 859 from high schools were collected and analyzed. Among middle school students, 49.7% of the respondents had consumed energy drinks, with the percentage being higher in boys than girls (p = 0.0001). Among high school students, 6.4% answered that they had used diet products, with girls comprising a higher percentage than boys (p = 0.0001). Awareness of the safe use of medications improved after training (all p < 0.05). Responses confirming the awareness of ingredients in medications increased significantly after the training. Preference for pharmacists increased, and preference for internet knowledge and users¡¯ testimonials decreased significantly after the training. The results indicate that it is important to educate people on the safe use of medications from adolescence or earlier and active involvement of pharmacists is desirable.
